Interruption of a Leftward Sightline by a Fixed Partition
QUESTION 18/20
A directed gaze can reach beyond an empty neighbouring fixture. In this arrangement, a partition interrupts that direction and creates a genuine distinction between two parts of the row.
The situation
The Office · Entrance: Lower right.
| Position | State |
|---|---|
| 1 | Ordinary visitor |
| 2 | Available |
| 3 | Available |
| 4 | Available |
| 5 | Available |
| 6 | Visitor looking left |
Protective partition: 3–4.
Recommended position: 3
Where the view stops
The observer occupies six and looks left. The partition between three and four interrupts that sightline before it reaches three and two. Positions four and five remain on his side of the partition; five is also immediately beside him. Protection must be attributed to the actual boundary, not to an assumed change of attention.
The remaining neighbour
Within the protected side, position two directly adjoins the ordinary visitor at one. Position three preserves two as a vacant interval before him. It therefore combines the screen’s privacy benefit with a genuine separation from the other occupant.
Conclusion
Position three is recommended. The partition terminates the unwanted observation; it does not terminate the obligation to consider the gentleman still present on one’s own side.
In plain language
The screen stops the creep’s view. Take three behind it, leaving a gap from the bloke at one. Two is screened too, but it is right beside him.
